In what has to be one of the cruelest of game ending twists, Bishop Heelan is headed to the state baseball tournament and rival LeMars is not.
When the IAHSAA state baseball tournament begins Bishop Heelan will be the #1 seeded team in the Class 3A field.  Good news for sure for Crusaders fans.  But the way Bishop Heelan made state no doubt leaves a bad taste in players and coaches mouths.
Playing at LeMars Wednesday night in a substate final the Crusaders battled LeMars for 11 inning before bowing 8-5.  The Bulldogs celebrated while the Crusaders contemplated the end of the season.  Little did players and fans from both schools no that the totals on the scoreboard would later be erased.
After both teams left the field it was discovered that LeMars used an ineligible player.  After contacting the Iowa High School Athletic Association in Boone, Heelan was named the game winner 7-0 and heads to state top ranked and top seeded in Class 3A.  The Crusaders are 34-4 on the season.  LeMars, who used an 11 inning comeback to beat Sgt Bluff-Luton in the substate semi-finals ends the season 27-8 and heartbroken.
Heelan opens the state tournament next Tuesday facing Williamsburg at 2PM.
Sports Director Travis Morgan will have the latest on this story beginning Thursday morning on Channel 9 Eyewitness News This Morning.
